Landscaping Pathways

Paths and walkways are the key to harmony and functionality in your backyard. They encourage foot traffic, help with water runoff and drainage, prevent damage to lawns, and they also help divide up a property to give it character. Paths often define and create space and are important in creating the human experience in your backyard landscape.

While not all landscape design projects incorporate stone paths or walkways, for most properties they make the property accessible and inviting. For high traffic areas between house and garage or to the backyard pool, a walkway creates a connection. A vast number of materials can be used for your pathway. Natural stone is popular for more casual, rustic landscapes while pavers and stamped concrete are popular for more formal settings.

Garden Landscape Pathways

Natural stone is often used on stairways and steps particularly in cottage landscapes. And it is often used in landscape features such as ponds and short walls on elevated flower beds. Where are elevations on a property, it is common to see stones used in paths and steps due to the need for stability. Some homeowners prefer to keep the landscape theme natural. As cottages age and as more babyboomers leave urban areas for rural regions, they are preferring to build new homes and lean toward paving bricks for pathways and driveways.

Materials for Paths and Pathways

Granite slabs and flagstone are two popular types of stone used in pathways today. It's possible to plan and create your stone path as a do it yourself project however it can be very hard work. Stone is heavy and difficult to work with. Cutting stone slabs is be done by experienced landscape contractors. Building pathways requires setting the path route, excavating, digging trenches or water drainage routes, filling with appropriate foundation materials and fill, compacting the underlying material, then laying the stone or brick pavers. Designs for pathways and paths vary greatly, however you may be able to find some creative walkway designs online or at your landscape supply store. A landscape architect / designer will be able to assist you with pathway design and paver design patterns. If your landscape pathway is long and extensive, it will be wise to hire a landscape architect or designer to help you plan and build it.

Landscape Contractors

The home renovation and even landscape construction business sector is composed of companies who provide excellent quality of services at reasonable prices. To ensure you get the quality of landscaping and other home improvement services you expect, visit the contractor's website, discuss their philosophy and work ethic with them, and go visit some of their former clients. See the work they've done first hand. As for landscape design firms, take a look at their landscape sketches, drawings and blueprints and ask them how they will approach your landscape design project. Schedule a time to meet with them at their office.

Your landscape architect has plenty of experience working with or hiring landscape contractors. An architect may work with specific contractors including brick layers, stone masons, aggregate suppliers, cement suppliers, garden suppliers and other landscape suppliers. Their guidance can help to reduce disappointments and their training and experience will be a great education for you.
